Our Abacus Program

The abacus program is spread over 10 levels and covers various concepts of mathematics from basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to advanced decimals, percentages, and negative numbers. Concepts are introduced systematically and work is progressively challenging so children never get bored. A friendly competition with parents and older siblings now and then also boosts our students’ confidence and interest. The curriculum covers the following:

  • Introduction of abacus
  • Calculating on abacus for addition and subtraction up to 99
  • Calculating on Abacus for addition and subtraction up to 1000
  • Mind math (without using Abacus) for addition and subtraction
  • Direct addition and subtraction up to 4-5 digit numbers
  • Addition and subtraction of bigger numbers with borrowing
  • Basic computation skills in multiplication and division
  • Complex multiplication and division with bigger numbers
  • Decimal addition and subtraction with bigger numbers
  • Calculation and working out percentages
  • Advanced decimal multiplication and division
  • Calculation with negative numbers
  • Sharpening of listening skills and speed computation
  • Combining of mind math and abacus skills to increase speed
  • Exercising both the left & right brain with mind math

Students will be given two workbooks. Workbook A is for classwork and workbook B is for homework. The curriculum is divided in levels so that each level can be completed in 10 weeks. All the concepts done in class are to be practiced at home. Students should practice abacus daily at home. For daily practice, homework is divided and given for 6 days.

In class students will practice different techniques to increase their speed. Various activities to increase the speed are:

Speed Writing – To improve speed of writing, neat and legible handwriting, teacher calls out a series of number to be written by students.

Image Flash – To develop image memory, teacher will show series of images using flash cards and numbers on abacus as fast as possible.

Oral Questions – To improve listening skills and to increase the speed, teacher calls out a series of number and operations to be worked out by students.

Fingering Practice – Fingering exercises based on the formulas to register formulas in student’s mind and to improve speed and accuracy.

Mind Math – Mind Math or Anzan is done by visualizing the abacus. Time taken by students is recorded and with continuous practice students will take less time to do the calculations.

 Level Test and Certificate

Level test are conducted after completion of the respective level. Certificates are issued for completion of each level.

‘Practice makes Perfect’ is the golden rule for our abacus programme. We know that with effort, commitment and persistence, everyone can learn to work on abacus and succeed in mind math. We wish all of you an enriching experience in learning to work on abacus and enjoying mind math excellence.
